If you follow the hair industry in South Africa, you have probably seen more women exploring Nigerian vendors and suppliers when looking for their next wig. As the founder of Modish Hair, I wanted to understand that market for myself.
I wanted to learn, not just buy
My sourcing journey in Nigeria was about more than finding wigs to sell. I wanted to see the market, speak to suppliers, compare different products and understand what customers were buying. The experience also helped me see some of the differences between the South African and Nigerian hair markets.
Not everything we see becomes Modish
One of the biggest lessons was simple. A supplier can have beautiful hair, but that does not mean every unit belongs in the Modish collection. We still need to look at the hair, the construction, the style and whether the product fits what our customers expect from Modish.
We curate before you shop
Our job is to make the buying journey easier for our customers. We source, assess and test selected products. Some units are customised or styled with the help of hair professionals before they reach our customers. We work with suppliers and hair professionals in different markets, including Nigeria. Product specifications can differ from one collection to another, so we describe each product according to what it act
Why transparency matters
The words used in the hair industry can sometimes be confusing. That is why we do not want to label every product the same way. If a product is Raw Donor Hair, we will say so. If it is a different hair type or construction, we will describe it accordingly.
The Modish standard
Our goal is not to have the biggest catalogue. Our goal is to build a collection of crowns that make sense for the Modish customer. Every sourcing journey teaches us something. We use those lessons to improve our collections, our customer experience and the way we help our Queens choose their hair.
